The Fake Witness rules
The Fake Witness is a game of memory… and suspicion. One at a time, everyone looks at an illustrated scene for 8 seconds: a beach, a train station, a kitchen… The catch? The Fake Witness sees the exact same scene with 2 or 3 things missing (a ball, a blob, an object gone), and nothing tells them they're the Fake Witness.
Phone in the middle, everyone asks one question and gets asked one, out loud. The Fake Witness answers in good faith, and that's where it all plays out: who has the trick scene, them… or you? On three, everyone points at a suspect. At the end, the real scene and the trick scene show up one above the other. With 6 or more players, play with 2 Fake Witnesses.
An example round
A beach: a red umbrella, 4 blobs, a dog. The app shows the order: Léa → Tom, Tom → Malik, Malik → Léa. Léa asks: "What color was the blob with its arms up?". Tom: "Nobody had their arms up!". Then Tom asks Malik how many blobs there were: "4". Tom saw 3… which of them has the rigged scene?
3 to 10 players · a single phone · offline
- 1One by one, look at the scene for 8 seconds. The Fake Witness sees the same scene with 2 or 3 things missing (fewer balloons, a blob gone, an object vanished…), and nothing tells them they're the Fake Witness.
- 2Phone in the middle, the app shows the question order (e.g. "Léa → Tom"): everyone asks one question and answers one, all out loud. It's only a suggestion: you can also question each other freely. No more touching the phone.
- 3Out of ideas? The small "Need a question idea?" button suggests one taken from the real scene, without the answer. Optional.
- 4The Fake Witness asks and answers like everyone else, in good faith. Watch out for answers that don't match… including yours!
- 5One more round of questions if you like, then vote: on three, everyone points at a suspect and the most-pointed-at player is out (a tie: vote again between the tied players). A Fake Witness? Busted! Innocent? The game goes on: a new round of questions, then a new vote.
- 6The witnesses win once every Fake Witness is caught. The Fake Witnesses win as soon as there are as many of them as witnesses left (e.g. 1 Fake Witness against 1 witness).
- 7From 6 players, you can play with 2 Fake Witnesses (3 from 9): they all get the same rigged scene, without knowing who the others are.
- 8At the end, the real scene and the rigged one show up one above the other (with the answers to any ideas drawn): spot what was missing.
- 9Points: for each innocent kicked out, every Fake Witness still in the game scores +2 (kept even if caught later), +3 bonus if the Fake Witnesses win. Each Fake Witness caught gives +3 to every witness still in the game.
